Abstract:
When immune cells are stimulated to fight pathogens, they revamp their metabolism, changing their diet and the pathways they use to break down food and provide energy. B cells, cytotoxic T cells, and helper T cells boost their use of glucose and increase their reliance on the glycolysis pathway to digest the sugar. Regulatory T cells mainly dine on fatty acids and generate energy through an alternative pathway, oxidative phosphorylation. Researchers are now trying to target these pathways to treat immune diseases. Clinical trials of existing drugs such as the diabetes drug metformin are already underway, and one company is also testing a novel drug that blocks oxidative phosphorylation in patients with ulcerative colitis.
